In this blog post, I’ll share my experience and insights about this remarkable fortress that will make you want to go see Hohensalzburg!

WHAT IS Hohensalzburg Fortress?

The Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched majestically on the Festungsberg mountain, is a medieval marvel that has stood the test of time. Its origins date back to 1077 when Archbishop Gebhard initiated its construction. Over the centuries, it evolved into the imposing castle we see today. What’s remarkable is that it has never fallen to foreign troops—a testament to its strategic location and robust defenses. 

But it’s not just its historical significance that captivates visitors. The fortress exudes an otherworldly beauty, its silhouette etched against the sky. From afar, it commands attention—a sentinel overlooking the charming city of Salzburg.  As you ascend the winding paths, the panorama unfolds: terracotta rooftops, the meandering Salzach River, and the lush Alpine foothills. The view is nothing short of enchanting, a canvas where history and natural splendor converge.

HOHENSALZBURG'S HISTORY

    1. The fortress was commissioned by the prince-archbishops of Salzburg.
    2. Construction began in 1077, starting as a basic bailey with a wooden wall.
    3. Over the centuries, the fortress underwent substantial expansion.
    4. The fortress measures 250 meters long and 150 meters wide and it’s altitude is an impressive 506 meters.
    5. The history of Hohensalzburg Fortress is rich and fascinating. It played a role in various conflicts, including the Investiture Controversy and the Thirty Years’ War. Notably, during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, the fortress came under siege but remained unconquered. 

IMPORTANT TO NOTE

  • Pet Policy: Pets are allowed on the paved paths and viewpoints at Hohensalzburg, but they are restricted from all other trails.
  • Hiking Trails: There are three main hiking trails:
    • Hoher Weg: This trail connects Mönchsberg (the forested hill behind Salzburg’s Old Town) with Festungsberg, where the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress stands. Expect a moderate hike with some steep hills, particularly on the climb from Old Town to the fortress. The length varies, but you’ll likely walk around three to four miles, including exploration time at the fortress.
    • Other Trails: While most trails atop Mönchsberg are paved, some sections include unpaved paths and long stretches of stairs. Good hiking shoes and water are essential.
  • Facilities:
    • Picnic Area: Enjoy a picnic amidst the scenic surroundings.
    • Group Use Area: Ideal for gatherings or events.
    • Historic Lodge: Explore interpretive exhibits at the lodge.
