Top 5 Restaurants in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

Puerto Peñasco, commonly reffered to as Rocky Point, makes for an easy vacation to Mexico.  Most travel here by car, and often stay in the resorts located on Playa Hermosa beach.  There are a few restaurants within the resorts themselves and some that are walking distance.  However, there are some very palatable and aesthetically pleasing places to eat at further into town too that I highly recommend.  Here are my Top Restaurants in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

1. POLLOS LUCAS

Rated a perfect 5-star on Yelp, this Mexican-style rotisserie chicken spot is a favorite amongst travelers.  The service is quick, the food, chicken with different sides, is savory, and last but not least, it’s super affordable.  People come for the amazing smoked flavor their hot and fresh chicken is famous for, but are impressed with the beans, rice, and fresh tortillas as well.  The restaurant is a palapa structure with grass/palm woven roof gives it a beach hut vibe.

The chicken is marinated in citrus then grilled over charcoal which gives it the mouth-watering juicy taste people come for.  You’ll also get pickled jalapenos, cabbage, and their much-loved salsa as well.  For a real Mexico vacation experience, and without breaking the bank, Pollo Lucas tops the list for must-eat at restaurants while in Rocky Point.

2. Kaffee haus

Although Kaffee Haus is in a compact dining space, it’s packed with customers for good reason.  It’s popularity means that wait times can be high and parking can difficult.  If you can make it passed these inconveniences, you’re in for a treat.  Many vacationers call it the best breakfast in Puerto Peñasco.  We loved the restaurants’ aesthetic, a quaint house-turned-diner with a German theme, and décor galore.  The menu is also a German/European mix with a wide selection of food to be found on their menu, ranging from breakfast to brunch.

As their name might suggest, Kaffee Haus is renowned for their coffee drinks.  Iced Caramel Macchiotos, Chai Lattes, and Chai Teas are amongst their most popular drinks.  I’ve tried all three and can vouch that they are equally delectable.  Their Ranchero Breakfast is not only excellent and filling, but quite a bargain as well, offering savory steak strips with two eggs, home fries, refried beans, and tortillas.  Everything on the menu, right down to the Chunky Munky pancakes, are good portions and quality meals.  Feel free to browse their menu HERE before you go.  You really can’t go wrong with anything you choose.  Like I said before, there’s a reason this place is always full, ranking at #2 on my list.

3. Al Capone's

This Italian & seafood restaurant named after the infamous American gangster offers a dimly lit setting that is also family and kid-friendly.  I’ve heard from seafood lovers, including my daughter, that they enjoyed the bucket of steamed clams and fish tacos.  Being a lover of land food, I dived into two pizzas and their wings on two different occasions.  The first experience was so good that we returned days later for more.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Margaritza Pizza, which as you might guess, is a margarita pizza.  The large pie was enormous and enough to feed the family.  As a big fan of margarita pizzas, I can say that it exceeded my expectations.  We ordered their wings for an appetizer as well, deciding on their Chipotle Chile and Honey Habanero flavors.  It was a unanimous decision that both were outstanding.   The other pizza we tried was called the Sonorense.  It’s a pie topped with carne asada, queso monterrey, cilantro, fresh cream, tomatoes, jalapenos, red onions, and salsa.  If you want a Mexican tasting pizza while in Mexico, the Sonorense is a great choice.  I should also mention that the staff is friendly, which always helps.  Feel free to browse their gangster menu HERE before you head to this dark but delicious diner in Rocky Point.

4. Casa Del Capitán

Casa Del Capitan is notorious for having one of the best views in Rocky Point.  The restaurant has a balcony patio that overlooks the town and oceanfront, and is perfect for sunsets and starry nights.  They serve seafood and traditional Mexican food and have mostly positive feedback from guests on various review-aggregation sites.  We have tried a few things here, including the enchiladas and the clams.  Both of these dishes were enjoyed by our party, but what really made this a memorable experience is the live Mariachi band that comes in and plays at the restaurant regularly.  They bring the fiesta and Mexico vacation experience right to you.

The inside of the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing, having the most classically Mexican culture look of all the restaurants we have been to in this city.  If you want that definitive cultural experience with an outstanding lookout, Casa Del Capitan is your place.  Browse their menu HERE beforehand.

5. Wrecked at the Reef

Wrecked at the Reef is the most American of all the aforementioned restaurants in Rocky Point.  It is an American/Mexican sports bar with live music, beach volleyball, and pin pong.  They offer palapa seating as well as three fire pits for the cooler nights.  As for the food, it’s good, but maybe not as memorable as some of the places at the top of this list.   It’s akin to bar food you’ll get at most decent pubs in the states.  Patrons seem to head to Wrecked at the Reef moreso for the atmosphere, the entertainment, and to socialize with fellow vacationers.

The other big draw to Wrecked at the Reef is the absolutely stunning sunsets you’ll catch right from your table.  Have you cell phone charged and ready, because you’ll want to snap some photos.  This sports bar is the perfect place for families with kids who want to get away from the resorts without going into town.  If you love the amazing beaches in Mexico, but want to feel like you’re still in the U.S. a little bit, Wrecked at the Reef may suit your needs.

I hope you found my guide to the Top 5 Restaurants in Puerto Peñasco useful.  Keep in mind, there are plenty of other good places to eat at here.  This is simply five that I have been to with my family that we thoroughly enjoyed for various reasons.  I’m sure you’ll find other fantastic spots here as well that I haven’t tried as of yet.  Wherever you choose to dine at, I hope you enjoy yourself!
